(solo show)Sala de Exposições - Loja Oficina, Guimarães (PT)25.10.2024 — 22.03.2025&nbsp; As a result of her creative process, Catarina Braga presents in this exhibition a set of ceramic and pottery pieces that combine local techniques of working with red clay with references to different imaginaries of the natural world. Based on a fictional legend in which, surprisingly, seeds transform into images and fire gives life to plants, the pieces carry traditional symbols, shapes and images with speculative meanings. This fictional legend, titled The Building of the Vessel, was written by the artist to accompany the pieces produced for the exhibition. As the project School of Transitions approaches the vast area of Casa de Mateus as a living laboratory, which invites different scientists, researchers and ecologists from diverse fields (geodesign, microbiology, ecological engineering, etc.) to investigate the territory, the work aims to experiment with ways of exhibiting research practices (which are continuous, active and alive). While the sound installation From the Forests (2022) in these rooms (created with sound recordings of various tropical rainforests) transported the museum's art pieces to a rainforest environment, our gaze was being directed to the pieces of sacred art, whose material was praised — the religious sculptures and the altarpieces built with wood: oak and chestnut — and unveiled the vegetal elements of the gilded carvings and the paintings. Even though the room is a totally artificial place, what it produces is natural: photosynthesis, plant growth, flowering, fruit and vegetable production. The place of a greenhouse is born out of the need for mass production, a fictional place that capitalizes on time and plant growth. Although the room is built according to specific conditions for the growth of vegetal bodies, here the medium becomes the human body, where experience is manifested instead. A plant is not just a plant. All the artworks are thought of as objects which were processed, manufactured, recreated, rendered, first by me as an artist, but before that, by us, human beings. From a distant point of view, people are invited to see a part of this artificial world that we live in, made of things that do not serve us. In this exhibition I don’t address the matter of current developments of, for example, robots nor does the exhibition have any human visual elements. Nevertheless, we human beings are the main subject of this exhibition and its pieces. What is implied is that the world we are building is increasingly artificial and infertile; we are altering the world to be a desert land. It is inside a fictionalised laboratory that we get to see this collective, symbiotic and ancestral organism; a multispecies entity that transcends the borders between terrestrial bodies (mineral, human, vegetal, animal, technological) and time and space. Para se conhecer, a planta-imagem indaga sobre a sua anatomia e materialidade e a sua relação com outras plantas. O reconhecimento da sua anatomia é descrito por capturas de ecrã que testemunham movimentos de aproximação ao seu corpo no contexto de ferramentas digitais de edição e visualização de imagem: ora desliza no picotado intermitente que demarca o corpo do seu redor, entre os seus pixéis e os pixéis do todo digital que o circunda; ora percorre a sua geometria vectorial, de ponto a ponto, como se se debatesse com as suas articulações. A procura por uma relação com outras plantas é feita em sequencias de imagens de herbários digitalizados encontradas no “labirinto brilhante”, através das quais imagina semelhanças e “consanguinidades” com o mundo vegetal. &nbsp; &nbsp; A projecção do vídeo sobre a superfície de uma mica, um mineral presente nos dispositivos tecnológicos onde circulam emojis, empresta à expressão das imagens e animações qualidades plásticas dos fósseis vegetais.
